SELWYN METCALFE PROFILE

Selwyn Metcalfe has been involved in real estate since 1980, first commencing as a salesperson with Grant Henderson & Co prior to accepting a position with the then Farmers Co-operative, now Allied Farmers, in Hawera where he set up the Residential and Commercial division of the Real Estate department.

After receiving his associate membership in 1982 he took over the managing directorship of George Ranford Real Estate Ltd.

A major change took place in 1992 when Selwyn joined First National Corporate as a shareholder.   In June 1999 Selwyn sold his shareholding in the First National corporate to Allied Farmers trading as Taranaki Farmers First National. He continued managing their Hawera branch up until 1 December 2001. Selwyn then activated his own real estate license and established Selwyn Metcalfe Limited.

Selwyn has been a member of the Taranaki District Committee of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand since 1985, serving as President from 1987 to 1989. He presently holds the position as Convenor of the Investigation Committee dealing with both agency and public complaints.

In 1996 Selwyn was made a Fellow of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (FREINZ).

Selwyn finds nothing more satisfying and rewarding than developing the staff, ensuring they succeed to a level where the Company goals are consistently met and exceeded. He strongly believes that to have a successful business you have to have successful people. He is a dynamic and experienced leader in personal motivation, goal setting, achieving financial independence and salesmanship.

Training systems and procedures play an important part and he believes that the traits required to excel in selling can be taught to anyone if they wish to learn.

Selwyn has served on a wide range of local, national and international committees and organisations. He is currently a trustee of the Taranaki Savings Bank (TSB) Community Trust Board and is an appointee to the Ngati Ruanui Multi Code Sports Committee. He was a former Director for the Alton Dairy Company prior to its amalgamation with Kiwi Co-op Dairies, now Fonterra. He is a member and past President of the Rotary Club of Hawera.  

Selwyn is also a Justice of the Peace for New Zealand.

In the 2005 New Years Honours List Selwyn was awarded Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of his service given to the community and sport.

In the same year he was appointed Trustee of the Taranaki Elite Sports Foundation Trust.

In 2006 Selwyn was appointed a Taranaki Regional Advisor to the New Zealand Community Trust Board.

He is the immediate past President of the Oceania Olympic Wrestling Committee and the Oceania region's representative to the International Wrestling Body (FILA). He is the immediate past President of the New Zealand Olympic Wrestling Union and has served on the executive of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association. A highlight of Selwyn's sporting career was his appointment to the Organising Committee for Wrestling at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

Selwyn was selected to coach the New Zealand Senior Wrestling team, touring the United States of America in 1977. He has represented New Zealand at four Commonwealth games as a Referee and Judge for wrestling.
